Kuruba community is one of the oldest community in India. During the Ramayana and Mahabharata era too there is a mention about Kuruba community. Chandra Gupta Maurya who built the Maurya dynasty, which is known to be the first dynasty in Indian history, is also a Kuruba. Hakka-Bukka, founders of Vijayanagara dynasty, is also from the Kuruba community. The era ruled by the Vijayanagara dynasty has been termed as the Golden Era of Karnataka history.
The Kuruba community's prominence declined after the rule of Vijayanagara dynasty when new developments took place both politically and economically.
During the British rule, Holkar and Sangolli Rayanna, both Kuruba’s, started to revolt against the Britishers by uniting and bonding people together in one voice. The British, seeing this upcoming revolt, subdued the Kuruba community.
In North Karnataka, the Muslim community which had a negative trait towards the Kurubas during the Vijayanagar dynasty rule also suppressed the Kuruba community. Therefore due to all the above reasons the Kuruba community had to flee the land in which they where born, though the Kurubas had to leave their mother land and seek shelter in various parts of India, they up kept their traditional, religious and professional ethics and values during the past centuries. During this transition, the Kuruba community adapted and learnt the tradition and culture of the land to which they had migrated. The Kurubas became a part of that community and were know in various other sub communities.
Therefore due to the above facts and reasons wherein our Kuruba community people is spread in and around India and the globe, Kuruba Samaja’s main aim through this website is to support combination of all the Kuruba community in India and abroad. This Kuruba Samaja website provides a platform to share thoughts, ideas and activities; to create a bond among all Kuruba's by bringing us all together and also to empower them to reach new heights, by trying to bring back, at least, our lost glory during the Vijayanagar era.
